Quiet Beginnings

A week had come and gone since that bittersweet departure from California....
The only sound disturbing the stillness of the warm summer day was that of the birds calling as they wheeled and circled overhead. The vastness of the ocean below lay becalmed, without blemish of wave or gentle ripple...still as a pond, mirroring the vivid blue of a cloudless sky. Obscured within it's own heat haze, the sun surged forth a golden ray, tinting the trees and ground with an amber glow
Amongst the clouds floated the great castle of New Haven, a mountainous shell brimming with magic. Though just recently discovered, it had already obtained a wide reputation, as well as it's governing body, headmistresses Alhana and Hikaru, witches of respectable power. The entire castle was a towering fortress, wrought through with chambers, elaborate staircases, and the occassional hidden passage, standing stoutly...as a mark of magical pride.
From New Havens main entrance a solitary form made it's way through the sky to their great oaken doors. Floating silently beside it, hands on broom, Terrin gazed fondly at the magical exterior, dressed within her normal set of attire, devoid of the normal school uniform.
With a sigh, the young witch reached out, urging her broom forward and rushing through the grand entrance portal, her golden orbs gleaming uncertainly as she made her way in...curious as to all the new findings of her new magical abode

"Wingardium Leviosa" proclaimed Ahlana, and gently directed the newest tapestry into the hooks that would support it. Gingerly, she released the spell, hoping that the hooks would hold the weighty thing.
The tapestry settled firmly into the hooks with a sigh, and Ahlana released her breath. She took a step back and surveyed her work. Not bad, it might be a little crooked, but it was hardly noticable. The tapestry was a grand one, like every other tapestry in the castle. It was a wizards take on the famous "Unicorn at the Fountain" tapestry. The unicorn still knelt at the fountain, but the surrounding crowd of humans were wizards, and respectful ones at that. It was one of Ahlana's favorites.
All of a sudden, a tiny bell rang in the air above Ahlana's head. She jumped, then, realizing what it was, smiled delightedly. "Apparate." she said, with a wave of her wand. Her surroundings melted, then reformed to show the Entrance Portal.
"Welcome!" she said, smiling broadly, as her eyes alighted upon a young witch on her broomstick. Ahlana's simple cream robes swirled about her as she walked towards the new girl. "I'm very glad to see new students, and I believe you're the first to arrive. I'm Headmistress Ahlana. You are...?"

With a small smile, Terrin stretched her long arms toward Alhana, giving her a firm shake. She let her go after a few seconds, looking up at her.
"Terrin....my name's Terrin," she replied quietly, gazing at the Headmistress. Seconds passed as she stared, stunned, at the woman before her. This witch, along with her colleague had always been percieved as stern and utterly strict to her before she'd left home; the direct and warm greeting was entirely unexpected. "Umm..it's a pleasure to meet you Headmistress"

"I'm pleased as well, Terrin." Ahlana answered with a smile. "Now, let's see, have you been sorted yet? It's always much easier to settle in when you know where you need to go."
Ahlana was actually quite happy to see anyone new come around. While she and Hikaru were great friends, months of seeing nothing besides each others face left a desire for more varied human contact. Ahlana was also anxious to make a good impression as a Headmistress, the Ministry of Magic, while quite a ways a way, always kept an eye on all of the Wizarding Schools. This new American school was being watched most of all.

Hikaru's eyes glittered mischeviously as she surveyed Ahlana's work as a critic would, arms crossed, head tilted to the side. With a slight smile, she pulled out her wand and flicked it firmly as she stated, "Wingardium Leviosa". With concentration, she moved the tapestry until she was sure it was straight. That was the way Hikaru liked it to be, as neat as possible.
After a moment, she too aparated to the Entrance Portal, and felt the familiar feeling as her surroundings changed. She saw that the commotion had been caused by the arrival of a student, their first student. Her dark eyes glittering softly, Hikaru noticed that Ahlana had already greeted the girl, and welcomed her to their floating institution in the sky. Terrin, she overheard the girl state as her name, seemed a bit overwhelmed, and perhaps surprised at Ahlana's warm greeting. That happened quite a bit actually. Why was it, Hikaru often wondered, that people always assumed that Headmistresses would be strict and stern. As Hikaru well knew, her colleague, and friend, Ahlana, was anything but this.
Rather than walking over, Hikaru hung back from the two, and waited to see what would happen.
